Plot of the film Stalingrad (1993 film):
1942. Having abandoned the idea of taking Moscow for a while, the German command plans an operation to advance to the South, to the Caucasian oil. On this route, the Germans need to take Russia's largest strategic center Stalingrad.
The importance of the city on the Volga is not only that it bears the name of the leader of the Soviet people, but also that Stalingrad is home to many factories producing weapons and ammunition. In addition, Stalingrad is a major river port.
Lieutenant Hans Von Witzland's platoon, as part of a special forces battalion, is heading to the Eastern Front. Witzland himself is going to the front for the first time, but his soldiers have already been to war. The easy victories of the Germans in North Africa have turned the soldiers' heads a little, and they are going to the front in high spirits and confident of a quick victory and return home.
But the first impressions of the Eastern Front made the arrogant soldiers look at the world differently. Having barely arrived in Stalingrad, the special forces see many seriously wounded, dirty and despondent soldiers. The battalion's first task is to take the factory on the move and suppress Russian machine gun nests.

Under heavy fire, the commanders drive the soldiers forward, and only a few manage to get into the plant. Soon the Germans manage to take the facility, but after such a meat grinder, only 60 people out of 400 in the battalion remain. The dejected soldiers listen to the radio, from which the Fuhrer cheerfully announces that the capture of Stalingrad is a matter of days. These reports further depress the soldiers, knowing how far from the truth this is.
One soldier's leg was torn off, and Vitzland ordered him to be taken to the hospital immediately. But there were so many seriously wounded in the hospital that the doctors could barely help only a tenth of those in need. Then one of Richter's soldiers, threatening with a machine gun, brought in a medic, who gave him a painkiller injection. Nevertheless, the soldier died, and Vitzland and the surviving soldiers of his platoon were sent to a penal battalion.
The harsh winter of 1942 has arrived, the 6th Army is unsuccessfully trying to break out of encirclement. Wehrmacht soldiers are dying of cold and hunger like flies. On Christmas, planes with "presents" from the Fuhrer appeared in the sky above the encircled army. Soldiers, languishing from hunger, hoped to find canned meat or bread in boxes dropped from the sky, but the boxes were crammed full of only iron crosses...
The command is trying to evacuate the encircled soldiers and officers from Stalingrad by air. But there is a catastrophic shortage of planes. There are monstrous queues in front of the planes, but only the seriously wounded can get into them. The huge army has no choice but to surrender to the mercy of the winner. An endless stream of soldiers and officers, throwing down their weapons, go to surrender. Vitzland and several of his fighters decide to make their way to the west...

Самый толковый фильм про Сталинград. Без героического пафоса, реальный и беспристрастный. Война показана как она есть
