Plot of the film Stalingrad (1989):
1942 год. После безуспешных попыток взять Москву Гитлер решил перенести направление главного удара на Кавказ. В режиме строжайшей секретности командование Вермахта разрабатывает план летней кампании под кодовым названием «Блау» — план наступления на южном направлении.
Hitler ordered that the seventy divisions that the Wehrmacht had near Moscow not be touched, but that new divisions be formed for an offensive in the South, using all of his allies for this purpose. This was supposed to reassure Stalin that Germany was not planning any new offensives except Moscow.
Despite the measures taken by the Imperial Security Service to prevent leaks, the Blue Plan was soon on Stalin's desk. But the Supreme Commander-in-Chief feared that this was yet another German disinformation campaign aimed at forcing the Russians to withdraw their troops from Moscow.
The General Staff suggested to Stalin not to make any sudden moves now and to concentrate on defense, but the leader and teacher of all countries and peoples did not want to sit back and defend. Feeling this mood of Stalin, the commander of the Southwestern Front Timoshenko suggests to conduct a counteroffensive near Kharkov with the forces of his front.

Stalin happily seized on this offer, but soon regretted it very much. Advancing without Timoshenko's reserves, he stretched the front, and then the Germans struck at the weakened flanks, encircling huge masses of Soviet troops near Kharkov.
Those who escaped encirclement, pursued by the Germans, retreated in panic further and further to the East, abandoning cities and villages to the enemy. In order to stop the flight, the headquarters issued Order No. 227 "Not one step back." One of the points of this order was the creation of barrier detachments from among the NKVD troops, which were supposed to stop the retreating troops and force them to defend their positions to the last bullet.
The headquarters forms a new line of defense in Stalingrad, where the Stalingrad Front is created. General Eremenko is appointed commander of the front; having received his appointment in Moscow, he immediately goes to the troops.
Stalingrad was not only a Soviet shrine bearing the name of its leader, but also a large industrial and port city through which supplies to the front were supplied. For this reason, Hitler divided his group advancing to the South into two. One was to advance on the Caucasus, the other on Stalingrad.

Until recently, the city, which had been deep in the rear, suddenly became the front line. Fights were fought for every street, every house. The city was defended by General Chuikov's 62nd Army, which the Germans repeatedly tried to throw into the Volga. It seemed that the Germans would soon capture the city.
But while Chuikov's army was pinning down the Wehrmacht armies in Stalingrad, the headquarters developed a plan for a grandiose counteroffensive codenamed "Saturn", in which troops from three fronts were to take part. As a result of this counteroffensive, the huge Wehrmacht group in Stalingrad found itself surrounded.
Having learned about the encirclement of his troops, Hitler does not allow the withdrawal of troops from Stalingrad and orders them to stand to the end. He sends several fresh divisions to help the encircled troops of Paulus' 6th Army, but only a miracle could save the encircled troops...
