The film's narrative begins in 1940. Europe is ablaze with the fire of war, and this fire is getting closer and closer to the borders of the Soviet Union.

Throughout the USSR, from the leader of the people to the last soldier, no one doubts the coming war, but the behavior of the country's top leadership puzzles both ordinary citizens and party leaders.

The second secretary of the Leningrad City Party Committee, Comrade Kuznetsov, also does not understand why the military is in no hurry to withdraw troops to the borders.

But the leader of the world proletariat remains calm and advises not to succumb to provocations. Stalin rightly expected that the Germans would not dare to fight on two fronts, besides, much intelligence about the new dates of the war was never confirmed... But this time the predictions of the German defector came true. The war that everyone was expecting began, but it turned out to be unexpected...

Hitler paid great attention to the capture of Leningrad in the upcoming campaign. From an ideological point of view, Leningrad was the shrine of communism, the cradle of the revolution and the city named after Lenin. From a strategic point of view, it was a springboard for an attack on Moscow from the North…

The city's leadership, without waiting for orders from Moscow, prepares to defend Leningrad. Local residents form militia units, and defensive structures are built around the city.

Soon, by order of the headquarters, the Leningrad Front is created, and Marshal Voroshilov is appointed to command it. But the legendary commander of the civil war was not ready to wage a modern war, and the headquarters sends him a replacement - the young and zealous army general Zhukov.

Meanwhile, the situation in the city is becoming more tense: the German advance units have reached the outskirts of Leningrad. Headquarters decides to prepare the Baltic Fleet ships and the city's strategic facilities for explosions, including the Kirov Plant, which produced the legendary KV tanks. Nevertheless, Zhukov manages to delay the German advance and push their advance units back from Leningrad.

After several unsuccessful attempts to take the city, Hitler decides not to storm it any more, especially since he needed additional forces for a more important attack on Moscow. Having withdrawn some of his divisions from the Leningrad direction, Hitler ordered the remaining troops to encircle the city and not to accept capitulation.

Thus began the siege of Leningrad, which lasted 900 days and nights. The Germans tormented the city with air raids and shelling from long-range guns. But the most terrible weapon for Leningraders was hunger. Only with the onset of frost was it possible to establish food supplies from the mainland across Lake Ladoga, through the so-called "road of life."

But the city held out, and when the Red Army dealt a powerful blow to the fascist beast near Stalingrad, the Leningrad and Volkhov Fronts broke through the blockade. Leningrad greeted the victors, and the first train with food…
