The film takes place in 1943. Colonel Gulyaev's rifle regiment reaches the Dnieper and prepares to force the river. Gulyaev believes that they should wait until nightfall and then begin the crossing.
But the new Division commander Iverzev, who arrived at the regiment, does not agree with him. After all, the command set the task of forcing the Dnieper immediately, not giving the Germans time to come to their senses and gain a foothold on the left bank. Iverzev gives Gulyaev two hours to prepare, after which he will begin forcing the river.
But the forcing of the Dnieper immediately stalled. Only a few platoons from Gulyaev's regiment managed to hold on to the left bank of the river, and the Division command was forced to make another decision.
Two battalions from Gulyaev's regiment under the command of Majors Bulbanyuk and Maksimov were ordered to force the Dnieper and advance to the village of Novomikhaylovka south of Dnieper. Where to create a bridgehead for the division's offensive.
The battalions must engage the enemy, forcing him to throw his main forces into battle, and then give the agreed signal for fire support from the division's artillery regiment.
But when the surrounded and bloodless battalions asked to support them with the promised fire, Iverzev received a new order at army headquarters.
