On April 12, 1961, fantastic news flew around the globe: the first man flew into space, which meant that a new era was coming – the era of space exploration. Ahead there would be hundreds of manned flights into space, landing of unmanned aerial vehicles on the Moon, Mars and Venus, but this day would remain in the memory of mankind forever.

But few knew what preceded this day. In the early 1930s, a young self-taught aircraft designer from Crimea, Andrei Bashkirtsev, went to Moscow with the plans for his airplane and an ambitious, but at that time seemingly fantastic dream of flying into space to distant planets.

In Moscow, Bashkirtsev's illiterate drawings were rejected, but he decided not to return home to Crimea, but went to the Urals, where at that time a grandiose construction was underway. Here fate brought him together with Konstantin Tseolkovskiy, a fellow inventor and self-taught scientist, who also raved about flights to distant worlds.

This meeting with Tsiolkovsky, who justified the use of rockets rather than airplanes for space flights, turned out to be truly revolutionary for the future general designer of rocket-space technology, Andrei Ilyich Bashkirtsev.

Ahead there will be long years of hard work, the joy of victories and the sorrow of failures. But failures only hardened Bashkirtsev, who sacrificed the most precious thing he had for the sake of realizing his grandiose dream...
