When the task was successfully completed the chief engineer of the plant, Sergei Alexeyevich Kirillov, goes on a long-awaited vacation.

Having sent his son to his mother-in-law's village in Ukraine, Kirillov and his wife go to the sea in the Caucasus, hoping to have a proper rest from their work problems. But unexpectedly, their vacation by the sea is interrupted by the news of war, and Kirillov and his wife immediately return to Voronezh.

Here Sergei Alekseevich learns that the order to evacuate the plant beyond the Volga River has been received and the director of the enterprise Shadurov is sent there to supervise the organization of construction on the spot. And Kirillov is entrusted with another no less important task: the direct evacuation of equipment, material values and workers with their families.

Kirillov tries to get a day's vacation from the director to go for his son, but the director reminds him that he is primarily responsible for the evacuation of the plant, and then his wife Maria had to go for his son. Together with Maria goes her friend and the wife of the head of production Lunin.

The Germans were rapidly advancing and soon bombed Voronezh, nevertheless, Kirillov manages to evacuate the plant in time and blow up the production facilities that were not transported. Having sent the echelon, Kirillov and Lunin, having a little time at their disposal, decide to go in search of their wives, but an unexpected breakthrough of German tanks forced them to turn back.

Caught under fire, Lunin is killed, while Kirillov manages to catch up with his echelon and go beyond the Volga. As it was not painful for Sergei to leave those places where he had lost the most precious thing he had, but now his place was where his country and his people needed him the most....
