Criminal activity in London died down for a while, and Sherlock Holmes sank into depression. As a respectable citizen, he could not help but rejoice. But as a detective genius, he was deeply saddened and bored.

This went on for some time. But then a retired Royal Marine sergeant appeared on Mrs. Hudson's doorstep. He was now a messenger and brought Holmes a letter from Scotland Yard Inspector Tobias Gregson.

In it, Gregson reported an incident in an abandoned house on Brixton Road. There, a man's body was found, but there were no signs of violent death. This seemed very strange, because there were traces of blood on the floor and walls.

This letter instantly cheered up Holmes, and he and Dr. Watson immediately went to the indicated address. On the way to the house, Holmes carefully examined the area and made important conclusions for himself.

After this, Holmes listened to Gregson's report, which indicated that the deceased was a US citizen.

While Gregson was speaking, Holmes explored the room and discovered the words "Revenge" written in blood on the wall. In addition, the detective found a wedding ring on the floor that the killer had dropped.

The evidence collected at the scene was enough for Sherlock Holmes to create a verbal portrait of the criminal. He was a short man with a red face. He wore heavy boots and a brown coat.
