In the morning, millionaire George Fortescue, owner of the Fortescue firm, dies suddenly in his office. An autopsy reveals that the influential industrialist was poisoned. Police Inspector Neil is assigned to investigate the murder.
It turned out that as soon as Fortescue arrived at the office, the secretary served him coffee. But there was no trace of poison in the coffee mug. Therefore, the poison had been planted earlier. Inspector Neal discovered that the murdered man was the only one in the family who ate marmalade at breakfast. This habit of the head of the family of eating marmalade was known to all, both members of the Fortescue family and servants.
In addition, on the eve of the murder, someone had planted dead birds, three blackbirds, in the house. It also turned out that George's death was in some way favorable to all members of George Fortescue's family. The eldest son, Percival, had long dreamed of standing at the head of the company. The young wife, Adele, had a lover.
The daughter could not marry a poor teacher whom she loved very much. The youngest son, Lance, had been banished from home by his father, and was now living in France. But on the day of his death, Lance came to London, referring to a strange letter recently received from his father. In it, his father regretted their quarrel, and invited him to return home.

While Neil was checking on the family members, a young maid, Gladys, is killed by an assassin. It was she who served the table on that ill-fated day. Murdered from a photograph published in the newspaper, recognizes Miss Marple. She had once vacationed with Gladys at the same boarding house, and there they met. Miss Marple knew well the sister of George's first wife, and willingly accepted the invitation to stay at the Fortescue house.
Miss Marple informed Inspector Neal that she had recently received a strange letter from Gladys. In it, Gladys had sent a newspaper clipping in which a certain invention, an elixir of conscience, was reported. Gladys also said that with the help of this elixir her fiancé would make one man act according to his conscience, and he would be able to marry her.
Since Gladys was in a hurry to go on a date before her death, it is possible that the murderer could have been this mysterious fiancé. Miss Marple soon learned the secret of the blackbirds from the late George's wife's sister. "Blackbirds" an abandoned mine in Africa that George had taken from his companion Mackenzie. Mackenzie soon died and his wife went mad, leaving his two daughters to fend for themselves. It is soon discovered that one of Mackenzie's daughters is in the house.....
