Lord Huxley died of a heart attack in London. Of course, this happens in life. However, if death befalls a young and healthy person, it is a tragedy. And for the great detective Sherlock Holmes, sudden death always looked suspicious.
And besides, this event coincided with another case. Almost immediately after Holmes learned of Lord Huxley's death, he received a letter from his brother Mycroft. Mycroft asked his brother to help Lady Eva Breakwell, who had found herself in a very difficult situation.
This lady had the imprudence to enter into correspondence with a poor squire. And all would have been well, if these letters had not fallen into the hands of a certain Charles Milverton.
This guy made a huge fortune from such cases and in the London criminal world he rightfully had the title of the king of blackmail.
Having learned that Eva Breakwell was going to marry a wealthy duke, Milverton resorted to blackmail. In exchange for the letters, he demanded a ransom of seven thousand pounds from the poor girl.
Assessing the situation, Holmes realized that the only way to get rid of the blackmailer's demands was to destroy Milverton's entire archive.
He had long believed that he could make a good robber, and now he had a chance to test it...
