1944, the American Expeditionary Force lands in Normandy. The Germans have taken up defensive positions on the high bank, using a system of engineering defensive structures. The American landing party has to enter the battle without the cover of tanks and armored personnel carriers under heavy enemy fire.
The soldiers try to hide under water, but the enemy's bullets find them there too. Suffering huge losses, the Americans move forward very slowly. Soon the entire coastline at the landing site was littered with corpses of American soldiers and officers, and the water was red with blood.
Captain John Miller, the commander of a company of rangers, managed to break through the German defenses on a narrow section of the front, take the heights and consolidate. At the cost of huge losses, the Americans manage to capture the bridgehead. Having completed the most difficult combat mission, Captain Miller now faces an even more difficult and responsible mission: to save Private Ryan.
Three brothers of Private James Ryan died in this war, and the American command decides to save the mother of four sons, at least the only surviving son. Captain Miller is ordered to gather a detachment and move out to search for James Ryan.

Miller formed a squad of his best rangers and set off. But finding a soldier in war is not an easy task. It is known that Private Ryan served in the 101st Parachute Regiment, which was thrown deep into the enemy's rear. Along the way, Captain Miller's squad clashes with the enemy and suffers losses. Two of his men are killed, the rest of the fighters are unhappy that they have to give their lives to save some private.
Finally, they manage to find Private James Ryan. As part of a small detachment of soldiers, he took up defense of a bridge of strategic importance. This bridge is the only chance for the Germans to cross the river and take a bridgehead to strike at American troops. But the bridge is needed for the advancement of their troops, so it must not be blown up, but rather held.
Captain Miller informs him that all his brothers have been killed and that he has been ordered to send him home. But Ryan refuses to leave and abandon his comrades, who were already few in number. In addition, the squad had several recoilless guns "bazooka", two machine guns and a limited amount of ammunition. Captain Miller has the opportunity to return and save the lives of both himself and his comrades.
But he decides to stay, and his comrades approve of his decision. As an experienced officer, John Miller took command of the combined unit and ordered the necessary defensive measures to repel enemy tank attacks.
The enemy did not keep itself waiting long and desperately rushed into the offensive. John Miller's men managed to blow up several tanks on the approach to the bridge, now these tanks prevented the rapid advance of the remaining tanks and enemy manpower.
At the cost of heavy losses, the Americans stop the German advance to the bridge before their main forces arrive. John Miller is mortally wounded, before his death he asks James Ryan to live his life with dignity, because for its salvation the motherland sacrificed its best soldiers...
