The film's protagonist, Daryl Witherspoon, is a senior at the university who dreams of becoming an intern analyst at the investment firm Smythe Bates after graduating.
Every year, the company selects five of the best students to participate in the competition, but only one gets the job with a salary of sixty thousand dollars a year. To become a contestant, you need to have a high average grade, have athletic achievements, and be a member of a student club. Daryl did not meet these requirements.
He grew up in a large black family, his father abandoned the family long ago, and Darryl, as the eldest son, had to replace his father. In order to pay for his studies, apartment and help his family, he worked all his free time: as a waiter in a student cafeteria, delivered university mail, cleaned the streets. One day, while cleaning the street, Darryl saw an announcement on a pole about participating in a scientific experiment.
All participants were promised a generous reward. The neuropsychology department was testing a new drug that had successfully been tested on rats. For testing on humans, a volunteer was needed. However, when the doctor named all the side effects, the room emptied and only Darryl remained.
The doctor explained that the drug has the ability to greatly enhance all human senses, so it is important to take it correctly, and never overdose. In the evening, Darryl injected himself with the required dose of the drug, but in the morning all his senses were so heightened that the ticking of his wristwatch seemed to him like the strikes of a tower chime, and the unpleasant smell from the mouth of a classmate sitting a few rows away from him almost strangled Darryl.
Unable to bear the suffering any longer, Darryl fails an important test, and is finally barred from becoming a contestant at Smythe Bates. Upset, Darryl goes to the doctor and complains that his drug has caused him to fail an important assignment.
The doctor advises Darryl to learn to control his feelings and everything will be fine. Soon Darryl understood all the benefits of the drug. Representatives of the Smythe Bates company arrived at the university to select five candidates for participation in the competition. A banquet was set in the student cafeteria for these five participants and two representatives of the company. While serving the table, Darryl managed to overhear what was being said at the table and, taking advantage of the moment, tried to show off his knowledge of these issues.
But most of all, Darryl amazed everyone with his phenomenal memory of stock prices. Darryl simply placed a newspaper with stock prices near the table and, using his now super vision, read them out. The company's management decided to take Darryl as the sixth contestant.
In the final round of the competition, Darryl defeats his biggest rival, Scott Thorpe, but after being congratulated, Darryl confesses that he took a special drug in order to become a contestant.
After some deliberation, the company's management decides not to hire anyone for the position of analyst-intern this year. Darryl is offered a job at the company, but for now in a modest position in the mail department. A year later, he becomes an analyst-intern...
