Narrative:
The film "We Were Soldiers" takes place in 1965. In Vietnam, there is a war between government troops supported by the United States and its allies on one side and rebels (the People's Army of Vietnam), supported by the USSR and China on the other side.
The Vietnam War, although fought in a relatively small area, could not have been an easy walk for the Americans, because it was fought far from the United States, which made it very difficult to supply American troops. In addition, fighting in impenetrable jungles without traditional communication routes significantly complicated the use of the most effective types of weapons.
All these factors had a negative impact on the overall situation around this war in the US itself and many considered it hopeless for America. But having gotten involved in this war, it was not so easy for the American authorities to get out of it without losing face, so the US President signs a decree on increasing the American presence in Vietnam.
As part of this decree, an airborne division is being sent to Vietnam, which will have to use new tactics of warfare, using helicopters to transport troops.
The division included a battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel Harold Moore, which, like most units, was made up of young and inexperienced soldiers. Shortly after arriving in Vietnam, Moore was given a combat mission: find and destroy a detachment of insurgents who had attacked an American base. Intelligence reported that the detachment had retreated into the mountains toward the Cambodian border, but no one knew how many there were.
Moore understood that it was dangerous to attack the enemy without knowing his real strength and resources, because the rebels' actions were an attempt to lure them into an ambush. This had happened here 11 years ago, when the rebels had destroyed large French forces, but orders were not discussed, and Moore had to carry it out.
However, Moore was right in his assessment, and when his soldiers detained the defector, he reported that there was a detachment of up to 4,000 people in the mountains...
