Narrative:

The action of the film "When the trees were big" takes place in the late 50s of the last century. The main character of the film, Kuzma Kuzmich Iordan, a former front-line soldier who lost his wife during the war, cannot find his place in life.

In recent years, Iordanov had sunk, started drinking, was a parasite, for which he was repeatedly brought to administrative responsibility. After so many warnings, the local police officer was forced to call Iordanov to his office and put the question bluntly: either he stops drinking and goes to work, or he will be deprived of his Moscow residence permit and expelled from the city.

Since Iordanov was a mechanic in the distant past, the local police officer is even willing to help him get a job at the plant. However, Iordanov does not want to be a mechanic, he wants to work in his last specialty - as a sales agent.

Having received a warning about the possible loss of his residence permit, Iordanov ignored it and went back to his old ways: making ends meet with odd jobs to have money to drink. One day, Iordanov decided to help an elderly woman deliver her washing machine to her home for a small fee. Having dutifully lifted the machine to the top floor, Iordanov placed it on the railing, but the machine slipped out of his hands and flew down. Iordanov rushed down the stairs after it, but slipped and was injured.

Once in the hospital, Iordanov lies alone, with no relatives or friends to visit him. But unexpectedly, he is visited by the same woman he helped with the car. The woman did not hold a grudge against Iordanov and even brought him groceries. She told Kuzma that she was from the village of Selivanovo, and after her husband's death, she came to Moscow to be with her children.

In the conversation, she mentioned that there was a girl living in their village who had lost her parents in the war. This happened in 1941, when she was only one year old, and now this girl dreams of finding one of her relatives.

Having recovered, Iordanov decided to "become" the father of this very girl and went to Selivanovo. Natasha, that was the girl's name, was very happy that she had found a father, and now she wanted him to live with her. And this was all Iordanov needed, because Natasha was already working and could support him, while Kuzma Kuzmich began to drink and loaf again.

This behavior of the father outraged the collective farmers, and many began to reproach Iordan, but Natasha stood up for him. She became very attached to Iordan and defended him in all situations. This circumstance caused pangs of conscience in Iordan's soul, and he decided to leave, confessing to Natasha at parting that he was not her father at all.

But Natasha refuses to believe and asks Iordan to stay. Seeing that the girl loves him very much, Iordan cancels the departure, but promises to radically change his way of life to make Natasha happy...
