Narrative:

The bandits wounded Budulai is picked up by the gypsies for whom he has interceded, Yegor and Sheporo. Concerned that Budulai may die and his murder will be blamed on them, Yegor and Sheporo leave Budulai's senseless body on the porch of the district hospital at night, where it is soon discovered by the doctor on duty.

The doctors manage to put the gypsy back on his feet, but he suffers retrograde amnesia - a partial loss of memory - as a result of a head injury. It happened that only the war remained in Budulai's memory, and all the events that happened to him after the war were erased from his consciousness.

Budulai does not recognize anyone, does not know where to go, his mind is filled only with the rumblings of cannonade and machine-gun bursts. So he wanders from place to place, finding no rest for his weary soul. One day, Klavdia's son Ivan, a cadet at a military school, arrived for a promotional vacation on the occasion of Victory Day.

While boating on the river, he saw Budulai on the other bank with a soldier's duffel bag coming out of an abandoned house. Vanya calls out to him, but Budulai does not hear him and disappears into the forest like a ghost. When Ivan returns home, he tells his mother about his strange encounter with Budulai.

When she heard that Budulai, whom she had been looking for for so long, lived in an abandoned house on the other side of the river, Klavdia immediately rushed to him. But the gypsy was already gone. Here Klavdia was forced to confess to Ivan that Budulai was in fact his father, and Vanya promised his mother to find him by all means.

But their meeting was accidental. One day Budulai passed by the military school where Vanya was studying. Seeing his father, Ivan rushed to him and told him the truth he had learned from his mother. Having met his son, Budulai considers himself the happiest man in the world, his memory gradually returns to him. But it is the return of memory that disturbs a gang of criminals who almost kill Budulai.

The leader of the gang, "bald", demands that the stubborn gypsy be returned immediately to the realm of the dead, from which he was lucky enough to escape. The bandits appoint Budulai a meeting in a cafe and demand that he keep his mouth shut, otherwise the criminals threaten to kill not only him but also his son, whom he has just found. In response to this Budulai declares that will only talk to their leader. Budulai takes his front comrades, with whom he went on a reconnaissance mission, with him to the meeting.

The former scouts, risking their lives, entered into single combat with the handmaidens of the "bald man", who, as it turned out later, had served the Germans in the past, but this time the former punisher did not manage to escape justice. Having finally defeated all his enemies, the happy gypsy returns home with his son....
