Narrative:

Action of the film Return from orbit takes place in the early 80s of the last century. Not long before his first flight into space, the wife of naval aviation colonel Pavel Kuznetsov dies, and the flight director is forced to remove him from the flight once again.

Before this, Kuznetsov had already been suspended from space flight twice, and his boss, Major General of Aviation Alexey Evgenievich Sviridov, was trying to convince the flight director, because in a year Kuznetsov would be forty-six years old, and then he might not fly into space at all. But the flight director believed that after the death of his wife, Kuznetsov was in a stressful state and therefore categorically objected to him flying.

Another refusal greatly upset Kuznetsov, and he submits a report for transfer to the unit where he served before joining the cosmonauts. Having learned that Kuznetsov left the cosmodrome, his best friend and partner, flight engineer Vyacheslav Mukhin, rushes after him, and, having caught up with his comrade on the train, tries to dissuade him from his hasty decision. But Kuznetsov declares that he has firmly decided to quit space.

The next day, Mukhin and another partner are sent into orbit. The purpose of the flight was to replace experimental power supplies on the orbital station, which had been operating in autonomous mode for a long time. During this work, an accident occurs in the electrical circuit of the docking unit, as a result of which Mukhin's partner is seriously injured.

It urgently needs to be returned to Earth, but due to a malfunction in the equipment, the descent module cannot undock from the station. Sviridov suggests sending Kuznetsov, who is hastily removed from the train, into orbit to help, and this time the flight director did not object…
