Plot of the film Fifteen Year Old Captain (1945 film):
The whaling schooner Pilgrim, which was fishing off the coast of New Zealand, was forced to return to Auckland due to a severe storm. Here, its captain was ordered to take passengers on board and deliver them to San Francisco. Captain Gul, as usual, did not take passengers on the Pilgrim, but this time he was forced to deviate from the rules, because these passengers were the wife and son of the owner of the shipping company, James Weldon.
Having learned that the Pilgrim is about to set sail, a certain Sebastian Negoro approaches the captain and asks to take him on board as a ship's cook. The captain agrees, since he now has very important passengers on board, and Negoro claims that he can cook exquisite dishes.
After a few days of sailing in the Pacific Ocean, the Pilgrim was becalmed, and Captain Gul, out of boredom, decided to go whale hunting a little. With most of the sailors, the captain went hunting, leaving behind fifteen-year-old cabin boy Dick Sand.

But while chasing the whale, the wind suddenly rose and the schooner began to drift away. Waiting was unsuccessful and Dick realized that the captain had most likely died, and now he would have to lead the "Pilgrim" to the shores of America.
The fifteen-year-old captain was left with only a few sailors left from his crew, two black slaves picked up at sea by the Pilgrim, and the ship's cook, Negoro.
The latter was clearly dissatisfied with the new captain, and seeing that Dick was still inexperienced, he put an axe under the compass and broke the spare compass. This sabotage by the cook led to the Pilgrim going off course, and instead of America, it ended up near the shores of Africa.
Having taken the land that appeared on the horizon for South America, the travelers were forced to land ashore due to a strong storm and soon found themselves in the hands of slave traders belonging to a certain Alvaz, the uncrowned king of Angola. As they later learned, their ship's cook Negoro was Captain Pereira, Alvaz's companion and a trader in "black wood." While transporting slaves, Pereira was captured by the English and sent to hard labor in New Zealand.
However, Pereira had escaped and now wanted to compensate himself and Alvetz for the losses they had suffered. The bandits decided that James Weldon should now buy his wife and son for a decent amount of money.
But fifteen-year-old Captain Dick Sand stood in the way of the cruel and greedy slave traders. He had learned the maritime law well, which stated that the captain was responsible for his passengers not only at sea, but also on land, until he delivered them to their destination...
