The events that preceded this August 19-21, 1991, which went down in history as "Three days in August." And shortly before the August events, delegations from the union republics gathered in Moscow to discuss the draft of a new union treaty.
It seemed that the parties had managed to come to a decisive agreement, but the President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin put forward a condition to the President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev. Yeltsin was ready to sign the union treaty, but on the condition that Gorbachev remove from power most of his ministers and heads of the security agencies.
But the old guard was not going to give in so easily and hand over power in the country. Having learned about the conversation between Yeltsin and Gorbachev, the conspirators decided to isolate the latter at the government dacha in Foros. A state of emergency was declared in the country and the State Emergency Committee (GKChP) was created.
Troops begin to converge on Moscow, and tanks and armored personnel carriers appear on the city streets. They all head for the building of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR (the "White House"), where Russian President Yeltsin and his supporters were at the time. They faced a difficult choice: either flee abroad and organize a government in exile, or be destroyed, since there was nothing with which to resist the army, the KGB, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Yeltsin's allies are calling for the first option, but the president decides to stay put and is not mistaken in his choice. After all, soon tens and hundreds of thousands of people will take to the streets of Moscow to defend their democratic choice...
