Plot:
In 1961, the world was not only one step away from World War III, but also on the brink of self-destruction, because this war between two nuclear superpowers would be the last. The leaders of the USA and the USSR understood this very clearly: President John Kennedy and the First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Nikita Khrushchev, but no one was in a hurry to sit down at the negotiating table.
Each of them thought that there are no negotiations without some concessions and compromises, and all these concessions and compromises will then be interpreted as a manifestation of weakness and defeat, which will have a detrimental effect not only on the image of the leaders of the two superpowers, but also on the image of these powers themselves.
The stumbling block was Cuba, where several years ago, not without the help of the USSR, the Cuban revolution took place, as a result of which the communist regime of Fidel Castro, loyal to the Soviet Union, came to power in the country.
This was a violation of the world's spheres of influence that had been established after World War II and seriously alarmed the Americans. After all, Stalin believed that the USSR's spheres of influence were limited to the states neighboring the USSR, while Khrushchev, who replaced him, believed that the interests of the Soviet Union extended across the globe.
President Kennedy should therefore tactfully convey to Khrushchev that the United States was deeply concerned about this violation of spheres of influence and discuss what the USSR would like to receive in exchange for its refusal to support the Castro regime.
At the same time, official diplomacy was in no way suitable for this kind of negotiations, since in the circle of both the American president and the leader of the USSR, there were enough “hawks” who advocated only a forceful resolution of the issue.
For this reason, President John Kennedy's brother, Robert Kennedy, who held the post of US Minister of Justice, suggests that the president conduct negotiations through unofficial channels. For this purpose, GRU Colonel Alexander Bolshakov, who worked in the US under the cover of a journalist, was chosen. He was the best friend of Alexei Adzhubei, the son-in-law of the USSR leader Nikita Khrushchev.
As an experienced intelligence officer, Bolshakov understood that for him personally, no matter how this story ended, not only oblivion was in store, but there could also be severe punishment, but when the world was one step away from the third world war, it was inappropriate for an honest Soviet officer to care about personal gain...
