Narrative:
The action of the film "And Shepilov, Who Joined Them" takes place in 1957. After Stalin's death in 1953, a new stance emerged in the leadership of the USSR triumvirate power. According to the leader's will, the party was to give way to the executive power in the country's governance, that is, the council of ministers, whose chairman was Grigory Malenkov.
His first deputy was Lavrentiy Beria, who was also the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. And Nikita Khrushchev received the post of Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU, which now lost its main management role and was supposed to be engaged only in the selection of personnel.
But the ambitious Nikita Khrushchev did not want to put up with this state of affairs, and first of all destroyed Lavrentiy Beria, having managed to lure Malenkov to his side. Nevertheless, the leadership of the USSR still retained a collective leadership, and the old Stalinist members of the Politburo, which was now called the Presidium, had the right to vote.
But even this situation did not suit Khrushchev, who sought to establish sole power. Using his influence on the members of the Central Committee, at an extraordinary plenum of the party, Khrushchev managed to get the post of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU and become an informal leader in the presidium.

But Khrushchev did not have enough education to lead the country and the party, so he decided to resort to the help of Dmitry Shepilov, who at that time headed the central party newspaper Pravda.
With Shepilov's help, Khrushchev prepares his historic report for the 20th Party Congress, in which he exposes Stalin's personality cult and the mass repressions of the pre-war years.
The refined intellectual, former scientist Shepilov, who volunteered for the front as a private and ended the war as a general, was delighted with Khrushchev’s actions and was glad to continue helping with his reforms, but soon he became completely disillusioned with Khrushchev.
Having become the first secretary of the party, Khrushchev began to grossly trample on the principle of collective management of the country, trying to become the sole master of the country, repeating, in essence, the cult of Stalin's personality, which he himself had recently debunked. In addition, the huge failures in foreign and domestic policy, due to Khrushchev's tyranny, could have turned into a great disaster for the country, therefore, a split occurred in the country's leadership.
After much deliberation, Shepilov decides to go over to the side of the conspirators led by Malenkov, who tried to remove Khrushchev from power. In history, this group of conspirators was called "The Anti-Party Group of Malenkov, Molotov, Kaganovich and Shepilov, who joined them..."
