Narrative:

The film takes place in 1982 and tells the story of the last months of the life of the Soviet statesman and party leader of the USSR Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev.

October 14, 1982 marked exactly seventeen years since Brezhnev became the head of the USSR. A native of the Ukrainian village of Kamenskoye, Yekaterinoslav province (now Dnepropetrovsk region), he made a dizzying career, going from a simple worker to the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU and Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

All this could not affect the health of the seventy-four-year-old leader, and already in the last few years his physical condition has noticeably worsened. Brezhnev appears less and less often at plenary sessions, congresses and other important state events, spending most of his time at his dacha outside Moscow.

He was very tired, and increasingly wanted to retire completely, but in the history of the country there was no case of a head of state voluntarily retiring. Lenin and Stalin died in office, Khrushchev was removed from power as a result of an intra-party conspiracy, but voluntary withdrawal from power had not yet been practiced.

Nevertheless, Brezhnev decides to write a letter to the Politburo asking them to resign, which puts its members in a very difficult position, since Brezhnev has not yet appointed a successor for himself.

There was another reason why the Kremlin elders from the Politburo could not vote for Brezhnev's dismissal. Each of them was afraid of losing his place, because perhaps in this way the aged leader could test them, and in the case of a positive vote, he would then accuse them of trying to create another anti-party group.

Thus, after a thorough discussion of Brezhnev's request for resignation, all members of the Politburo were forced to decide that Brezhnev should remain in his post until the end...
