Plot:
The cartoon takes place in ancient Rus'. A boy was born into the family of a Rostov priest, who was named Alyosha, after his father Popovich. As a child, Alyosha had no interest in the sciences that they tried to instill in him, but stubbornly wanted to become a daring warrior - a bogatyr.
When Alyosha grew up, he had a chance to save the people of his native city of Rostov. A certain Tugarin Zmey sent his Tugar army to Rostov to impose a tribute on Rostov. The city residents were given the condition to collect all the gold by the morning to pay the tax. At the city meeting, they decided what to do: pay the infidels or accept the battle. But the Tugarin army significantly outnumbered the Rostov residents.
Therefore, Alyosha Popovich suggests collecting all the gold and putting it in a cave. When the Tugarians come for it, close the entrance to the cave and wait until the infidels die of hunger. But that is what they decided. The initiator of this idea and his uncle and Alyosha's mentor, the grumpy and cowardly old man Tikhon, were entrusted with closing the entrance to the cave.
In the morning, when the Tugarians entered the cave for gold, Alyosha and Tikhon blocked the entrance with a huge stone. But the stone rolled down the gentle slope of the mountain, not only opening the way for the robbers, but also sweeping away the dwellings of the Rostov residents on its way. For this, the people demand that Alyosha and Tikhon be impaled. Alyosha did not wait for reprisals and set off, no matter what, to return the gold to the Rostovites.

Tikhon, who was looking after Alyosha, could not let him go alone, and went after him. On the way, Tikhon exchanged all his clothes and Alyosha's heroic sword for a horse with the gypsies. After all, a real hero must have a heroic horse. But when Alyosha untied the horse's mouth, it spoke in a human voice, frightening Alyosha and Tikhon to death.
The horse's name was Gaius Julius Caesar, or simply Julius. He had previously served at a monastery that had a good library, so he was more of a learned horse than a heroic one. Alyosha soon became convinced of this, as he had barely jumped on the horse when its legs buckled under the mighty hero. But Alyosha does not drive Julius away, because even a learned horse can be useful.
Following Alyosha were: Lyubava, a 16-year-old girl in love with him, and her grandmother, who did not want to let her granddaughter go with the "good-for-nothing", as she called Alyosha. Soon their paths crossed, and together they began searching for Tugarin the Serpent. Getting into various traps and difficult situations, our heroes finally overtook Tugarin's lair.
Under cover of night, they penetrate the Tugarin camp and take their gold, which the Tugarin managed to melt into one large ball. But Alyosha does not want to secretly, like a thief, "steal" his gold, so he wakes up the sleeping Tugarin and challenges them to a fight. Alyosha manages to defeat the entire Tugarin army, but Tugarin himself kidnapped Lyubava and demanded gold in exchange for her.
Alyosha sends Tikhon and Grandma Lyubava to Rostov to deliver the gold, and he himself goes in search of Tugarin the Serpent. But Tikhon decided to leave the gold for safekeeping to the Prince of Kyiv, and come to Alyosha's aid. Help came in time, and the evil robber Tugarin was defeated.
Having loaded the tied Tugarin onto a cart, the heroes set off for home. On the way, they stopped in Kyiv for their gold. Tugarin the Serpent was put in a cage and began entertaining people in the city square…
