The plot of the film Things of Bygone Days:
1926, the time of the NEP in Russia. The Leningrad Ugro officers found the mutilated corpse of an unknown man in the suburbs near the railway, without documents, but with a fragment of a letter probably written by him. Nevertheless, the detectives soon manage to establish the identity of the deceased, he was the famous antiquarian Bogoyavlensky.
As it turned out, the criminals had visited the antique dealer's apartment the day before, turning everything upside down, so experienced detective Fyodor Savelyev immediately assumed that Bogoyavlensky had been killed for the purpose of robbery. But young policeman Alexander Beletsky disagreed with his senior comrade. After examining the antique dealer's apartment, he came to the conclusion that it was not a robbery that had taken place, but rather a search.
And why was it necessary to kill Bogoyavlensky himself, and even disfigure him beyond recognition? Most likely, the criminals were looking for something in the antique dealer's apartment, and tortured him before his death to find out some secret. Trying to unravel this secret, Beletsky comes on the trail of a certain Dumansky, who was part of Grigory Rasputin's inner circle. But Beletsky does not manage to bring the matter to an end, having died while detaining the criminal.
Forty-six years have passed, and the events of long-gone days have once again reminded us of themselves. When demolishing an old house, builders discovered a hiding place containing a briefcase. The briefcase was handed over to the police, but at first glance there was nothing interesting in it, only a notebook containing a banknote from pre-revolutionary times. However, the detectives were interested in something else: the antique dealer Bogoyavlensky once lived in this apartment, whose strange murder in 1926 was never solved…
