This story began in the early 80s of the last century. In the city of Shakhty, Rostov region, on the bank of the Grushevka River, the body of a girl with signs of violent death was found. According to eyewitnesses, shortly before her disappearance she was seen with a tall man in glasses, wearing a hat and a long raincoat.

Since then, in the vicinity of the city, detectives have found with alarming regularity the bodies of girls, young women and even boys, killed with particular cruelty.

Multiple stab wounds, cut out eyes and genitals, as well as traces of sexual violence allowed the investigation to conclude that all these murders were the work of one person.

An ancient Latin proverb says: "To understand who did it, you need to understand who benefits from it." However, in this case it was obvious that it could not be applied to this matter, because it was practically impossible to understand who benefits from the deaths of dozens of innocent and unconnected people.

In addition, the cold-blooded and cruel killer was too prudent and left no traces, and the description of the criminal's appearance was too superficial.

However, when the case to catch the maniac was headed by the investigator for especially important cases of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office, Musa Kastoyev, the detectives had a chance of success.

First of all, Kastoyev found out that the maniac committed most of the murders in the forest belt near the railway station, therefore, this area was immediately put under round-the-clock surveillance.

In addition, police patrols took control of all places where large numbers of people congregate: markets, train stations, parks – places where the killer could look for a potential victim.

However, there was no result. During the investigation of the maniac's case, hundreds of other crimes were solved, but he himself somehow miraculously turned out to be invulnerable. And only in 1990, in the area of the forest belt near the railway station, a suspicious citizen was detained, matching the description of the alleged criminal.

His name was Andrei Chikatilo. It turned out that he had already come to the attention of the investigation several years ago, but was released due to lack of evidence...
