The plot of the cartoon The Snow Queen (cartoon 1957):
In an old northern town there lived a boy named Kai and a girl named Gerda. They were neighbors and spent all their time together.
One summer Kai and Gerda planted two roses as a sign of their friendship and promised never to part. But the warm summer ended, followed by a rainy autumn and a cold winter with its long evenings.
On those long winter evenings Kai would come to Gerda's house, and together they would listen to her grandmother, who knew many old interesting tales.
One day Kai asked his wise grandmother where snowflakes come from. The grandmother told the children about a wicked and cold snow queen who lived far away in the north by the sea. Gerda, who was frightened by this story, suddenly thought that the snow queen had looked in their window.
But Kai promised to put the snow queen on a hot stove if she dared to enter their house. When the snow queen hears the arrogant boy's words, she decides to punish him.
It intensifies the frost and the wind in the town where Kai and Gerda lived. The window in Gerda's house was blown open by the strong wind and many cold snowflakes and ice flakes flew in. One ice flake got into Kai's eyes, and Gerda noticed that he suddenly changed.

Kai became mean and cruel, he mocked Gerda and refused to play with her. Then one day he went sledding and disappeared. He hitches his sled to the snow queen's sled, and soon finds himself in her domain.
The Snow Queen promises Kai a happy, peaceful life without joys and worries, only to wait a little while until his heart becomes completely icy. Gerda rushes off to find her named brother.
In search of Kai, she goes to the river and asks for help in finding him. The river brought the boat with Gerda to a kind witch. The witch had no children and wanted Gerda to stay with her.
But the girl has to look for Kai, so she runs away. By the sea, a crow tells Gerda that she has seen a blond boy who has recently appeared in a neighboring kingdom. But that boy turned out to be a young prince.
The princess takes Kai's fate to heart and decides to help Gerda. She gives her her own carriage, warm mittens, coat and hat. In this outfit and carriage Gerda looked like a princess and soon, she became a victim of forest robbers.
The leader of the bandits, a girl about the same age as Gerda, was also moved by Gerda's story. The little bandit had many wild animals in her captivity.

They also heard Gerda's story and hurried to tell them that they knew where Kai was. They saw him in the company of the snow queen in Lapland. The little bandit lets Gerda go and gives her a reindeer to take her to Lapland.
In Lapland, they stayed at an old woman's house. The old woman told them that the snow queen had left Lapland and was now in Finland.
Gerda, losing her last strength, finds the ice castle of the snow queen. But Kai is a stranger and doesn't recognize her at all. Then Gerda went over and took his hands. From this warmth, the magic ice flake that was in Kai's eye popped out, and he was glad to see Gerda.
At this time, the mistress appears in the castle. But Gerda intercedes Kai, and demands that the snow queen let them go.
Suddenly all the ice surrounding them began to melt quickly and the snow queen disappeared before their eyes, and happy Kai and Gerda returned home, that they would never part again...
