Plot of the film The Cranes Are Flying (1957):
The film takes place in June 1941, on the eve of the war, in Moscow. A young but promising Soviet engineer, Boris, returns on a Sunday morning after a date with his beloved Veronica.
Boris was incredibly happy on this Sunday morning: ahead was a big and bright future, love, sun, a peaceful sky in which cranes fly carefree...
But the urgent morning TASS report about the beginning of the war with Germany put an end to the bright happy future, or at least postponed it to an indefinite future. And although Alexey, as an engineer at a military plant, had a deferment from the army, he secretly went to the military registration and enlistment office and signed up as a volunteer for the front.
The summons from the military registration and enlistment office did not take long to arrive, and it arrived so quickly that Alexey was a little upset: the next day was Veronica's birthday, and he had prepared a gift for her. Veronica was also very upset by Boris's sudden departure, but he consoled the girl that he would definitely return and they would still be very happy...

However, the war separated the happy lovers forever. Boris died at the beginning of the war, but the news of his death reached Veronica only at the end of the war, from Boris's comrade-in-arms. All these long years she waited agonizingly for letters from Boris, hoping that he was alive and well, therefore, even now she did not believe in his death, because her comrade-in-arms did not personally see how Boris died.
Finally, the very day of victory that the huge country had been waiting for so impatiently arrived. Veronica, with a bouquet of flowers, rushes to the station where the front-line soldiers are arriving, still hoping that Boris is alive.
At the station, she meets Stepan, Boris's best friend, with whom they went to the front together. When Stepan returned to Veronica Boris's photo, which he gave him along with his documents when he went on a reconnaissance mission, the girl understood everything without words: Boris is no more, he died.
Veronica cried bitterly, but the sight of happy people around her brought her back to life. She gave the bouquet of flowers she had brought to greet Boris to the front-line soldiers who had returned victorious, realizing that Boris had not died in vain. At that moment, someone in the huge crowd noticed that cranes were flying over Moscow for the first time since the war…
