Plot of the cartoon The Scarlet Flower (cartoon 1952):

Once upon a time in Rus' there lived a rich merchant. One day the merchant was going to go on his merchant business to distant overseas countries. Before leaving, the merchant instructs his three daughters to live in peace in his absence, and in return, he will bring them any gift they wish from distant lands.

The eldest daughter asks her father to bring her a crown decorated with precious stones as a gift. The middle one dreams of a crystal mirror, looking into which she would always remain young and beautiful. The youngest, Nastenka, asks her father to bring her a scarlet flower.

This request of the younger sister made the two older sisters laugh, but the father promises to fulfill all the requests of his daughters.

The merchant found gifts for his two older daughters without much difficulty, but finding a scarlet flower, and one that would be more beautiful in the whole wide world, was not so easy. The merchant traveled to many countries, sold all his goods, but nowhere could he find a gift for his youngest daughter.

One day, while sailing on the sea, a merchant's ship was caught in a storm and he found himself cast adrift on an uninhabited island. The merchant was struck by its beauty.

In the depths of the island he saw a palace sparkling with lights and entered it, but the palace was completely empty. But as soon as the merchant thought about food, a table with the most exquisite dishes and wine appeared before him.

Having thanked the invisible host, the merchant dined on what God had sent and went out into the garden. In the garden he saw a scarlet flower, from which a bright color emanated. But as soon as the merchant picked the flower, the mercy of the invisible host changed to anger.

Suddenly a storm broke out and a terrible monster appeared. Because the merchant picked a flower, the monster threatened him with death.

The merchant replies that he picked the flower not on a whim, but as a gift to his youngest daughter Nastenka. Hearing this, the monster demands that the merchant return home, plant the flower in the ground, and send one of his daughters to the island the next morning.

But the merchant refused. Then the monster demands that the merchant himself come to him tomorrow morning, for this purpose it hands the merchant a magic ring.

By putting this ring on his left little finger, the merchant will immediately find himself on the island. Soon the merchant found himself at home and delivered all the promised gifts to his daughters.

But Nastenka learned what misfortune befell her father because of her gift, and when her father fell asleep, she put on the magic ring and found herself on the island. Having planted the scarlet flower back into the ground, she turns to the invisible owner to forgive her and her father.

The invisible owner, in gratitude, gives her all the riches of the island. But Nastenka refuses everything. One evening, she saw the very monster that her father had spoken of. Seeing that Nastya was very scared, the monster was upset, but Nastya hurried to console him and promised to stay on the island for a while.

Seeing that Nastya was homesick, the monster let her go visit her relatives, but the next evening by eight o'clock if she did not return, the monster would die of melancholy. Nastya's sisters, seeing that Nastya had returned in new rich clothes, decided out of envy to prevent her from returning to the island on time, and turned all the clocks in the house back.

But Nastya felt trouble in her heart and hurried to the island. The monster was already lying dead next to a withered scarlet flower. Bitter tears rolled from Nastya's eyes, and as soon as they touched the ground, the flower suddenly began to shine brightly, and the terrible monster turned into a handsome young man. The evil sorceress bewitched him into a terrible monster, and cast a spell until some girl would fall in love with him in such a terrible form...
