The action of the movie takes place in the early 50's of the last century. The plot centers on the large Zhurbin family, hereditary workers of a shipyard.

The oldest Matvey Dorofeyevich Zhurbin, the head of the family and an old worker who stood at the very foundation of the plant. Despite the fact that Matvey Zhurbin was in his eighth decade, he continued to work at his native plant, teaching and educating the younger generation.

His son Ilya Matveyevich Zhurbin worked as a site manager, and the three Ilyas Zhurbins: Alexei, Viktor and Kostya were among the best workers at the plant. His eldest son Anton, a candidate of technical sciences, had recently returned from Leningrad as an engineer and would now introduce a new method of ship construction at the plant.

This new method of ship construction requires not only experience but also knowledge, so many of them, despite their age, will have to sit at their desks and take up their textbooks again.

Against the background of all this industrial reform, Ilya Zhurbin's youngest son Alexei experiences a personal drama. Alexei, the plant's best riveter and a front-runner in production, was soon to be married, and the plant had even already allocated him a room, but suddenly his fiancée, Katya, becomes infatuated with the not-so-young head of the plant's club.

This misunderstood genius of art and victim of injustice, as he portrayed himself, caused the naive girl more a sense of pity than love, but when Katya got pregnant by him, the head of the club simply ran away without leaving even his new address.

Having received such a blow, at the very beginning of her adult life Katya secludes herself outside the city, realizing that all her ambitious dreams of study and marriage are now practically unrealizable. But one day Alexei appears on her doorstep.

Despite the bitter offense that caused him Katya, his rash act, he found the strength to understand and forgive the girl, because he loved and could not imagine a life without her....
