180 AD, Germany. Emperor Marcus Aurelius ends the victorious war, defeating the German Barbarians. The Emperor owes this to his best general Maximus, commander of the northern army and the Spanish legions.
Having expanded his empire, Marcus Aurelius is going to hand over power in Rome to a popularly elected senate, as he feels that his days are numbered. Seeing Maximus's enormous popularity among the people, Marcus Aurelius wants to hand over power in Rome to him for guardianship until the senate is elected.
The Emperor has a son, Commodus, but he knows that his son is a sick paranoid, thirsty for sole power, and will destroy what his father created with such difficulty. However, Maximus refuses such a high trust, he is a soldier, not a politician. In addition, his wife and eight-year-old son, whom he has not seen for more than two years, are waiting for him at home. Commodus thought that his father had summoned him to hand over power to him, and was very disappointed by his father's decision. In anger, he strangles his father, telling everyone that his father died a natural death. Maximus is urgently summoned to the emperor. At this time in Rome, having come to power, Commodus wants to destroy the Senate. In order to increase his popularity among the people, he decided to resume holding gladiator fights, closed five years ago by his father. Having learned about this news, the organizers of the fights were happy, because for five years they had to hold fights in some holes on the outskirts of the empire.
Proximo also rushed to Rome with his fighters and in the very first battle his gladiators, led by Maximus, win a convincing victory. Commodus personally wants to greet the gladiator hero. He went down to the arena and approached the fighter, but he demonstratively turned away from him. When the gladiator, on Commodus's orders, took off his helmet, he was stunned to see Maximus.
Commodus orders the obstinate slave to be killed, but the crowd in the stands demands a pardon. Soon, the brave gladiator general Maximus wins the hearts of the Romans and becomes more popular than the emperor himself. Commodus understands that he can no longer simply kill him. Therefore, he decides to kill him in a gladiatorial duel: the emperor versus the slave...
