Plot of the series Fighters season 1:

The action takes place in 1943. In the regiment fighter aircraft Lieutenant Colonel Kanishchev new recruits from the cadets of flight schools. Generational change in war happens quickly. And soon these newly arrived "greenhorns" will become commanders of squadrons, regiments and divisions. And many of them will die in the first battles, without ever having time to grow old.

Along with the young reinforcements, experienced fighter pilot Sergeant Ilya Bestuzhev also arrives in Kanishchev's regiment. In the past, a major and hero of Spain, hereditary nobleman Bestuzhev paid for his origins and was convicted in 1939. With the beginning of the war, Bestuzhev was released from the camp, but they were in no hurry to return his rank and awards.

At this time, the regiment was conducting aerial reconnaissance of the area, which the command had dubbed the "black square" due to the large concentration of enemy anti-aircraft guns and fighter aircraft in this area. The fighters soon discovered that the Germans were actively building up their forces for an offensive in the "black square": large columns of enemy equipment were spotted in the area, moving only at night and with maximum camouflage.

But the front command was not inclined to take into account the conclusions of Kanishchev and his commander, General Makarov, about the location of the future German offensive. Having rightly judged that this redeployment of forces and resources could well be a diversionary maneuver. And the decisive blow would be delivered elsewhere. Therefore, Makarov demands from Kanishchev other evidence of preparations for an offensive on their sector of the front.

And only when the fighters managed to find and destroy the crossing camouflaged under water, the front headquarters believed that the Germans would attack in the direction of Kanishchev's regiment. But it was too late. A captured German pilot showed that it would begin in a few days. And by that time it was impossible to remove and transfer forces and resources from other parts of the front to help Kanishchev.

Therefore, Kanishchev receives the order to hold out and prepare for defense. Kanishchev understands that his regiment is abandoned to its fate. After all, his fighters will have to dig in and hold the defense like a regular rifle regiment.

At this time, an order comes from the front headquarters to reinstate Bestuzhev in his rank and return all his awards. This was very opportune, and now Kanishchev instructs Ilya to lead the defense in the sky, while he, with his staff, aviation technicians and wounded pilots, will hold the defense on the ground...
