The main character of the film is a former prisoner, thief - recidivist Egor Prokudin, nicknamed Gore. After another five-year stint in prison, Gore decided to quit the life of a thief. In the prison and camp system of the USSR, there was a tradition of meeting women by correspondence; such brides were called correspondents.
Having been released, Yegor decided to visit all his correspondence students. But only one, a village woman, Lyuba, accepted him.
At first, Lyuba and her relatives met the former convict with hostility. They were very worried about their daughter, who could not arrange her personal life. Lyuba was already married to a local hooligan and alcoholic.
True, Yegor himself still does not really know whether to stay here or not. On the one hand, he was drawn to Lyuba. On the other hand, the criminal traditions that he had previously reverently honored did not allow the thief to work or start a family. Yegor knew that the thieves' world would not forgive him for his betrayal and would never leave him alone.
Soon Yegor got a job, first as a driver for a local assistant prosecutor. But driving an assistant prosecutor was still too much for the former gangster, and he became a tractor driver.
Постепенно налаживаются отношения и с родственниками Любы, а с ее братом Петром они становятся друзьями. Однако завязать с преступным прошлым оказалось не так просто и судьба Егора была решена на воровской сходке…
