Narrative:
The action of the film "Cruiser" takes place in the summer of 1945 at the final stage of World War II. The theater of military operations moved from Europe to the Pacific region, where the allies of the anti-Hitler coalition confronted militaristic Japan.
Despite Japan's difficult economic situation and the obvious superiority of forces in favor of the coalition, the Japanese were in no hurry to surrender, but resisted fiercely. Kamikaze units, that is, suicide bombers who piloted airplanes, were widely used, as well as torpedoes used on submarines.
At this time, the US government decides to put an end to this war, and at the same time to test the first atomic bomb in real conditions. For this purpose, two cities were chosen: Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which will be bombed from the US military base on the island of Tinian.
The problem was how to deliver the warhead to Tinian, since Japanese aircraft and submarines were operating in the region. After some discussion, the leaders of the operation decided to send the secret cargo on the cruiser Indianapolis, and in order not to attract much noise to this mission, the cruiser was to proceed to Tinian without an escort.
The heavy cruiser Indianapolis was designed to combat enemy surface fleets and aircraft, but it was practically defenseless against submarines, so the cruiser was always accompanied by destroyers during its voyage.
In order to somehow protect the cruiser, the captain was given the task of moving in zigzags, but he himself understood that against torpedoes controlled by suicide bombers this was almost useless. Nevertheless, the cruiser Indianapolis successfully delivered the secret cargo to Tinian, and now was heading to the front and again without an escort. But this time the campaign was far from successful, and the cruiser was subjected to a torpedo attack by a Japanese submarine.
Having received significant damage, the cruiser Indianapolis sank, but a significant part of its crew managed to escape. However, now the surviving sailors were faced with a fight with the scorching sun, hunger, thirst and terrible sea predators...
