The film takes place in the early 80s of the last century. For a series of petty thefts, a difficult teenager Vova Kireyev is brought to trial. The sentence is expected to be harsh - imprisonment and referral to a correctional labor colony. But at the last moment, Pavel Vasilyevich Antonov, the head of the summer sports and labor camp for difficult teenagers, appears in the courtroom.
He asks the court to take into account the fact that the teenager often stole because he simply had nothing to eat. He has no mother, his father is an alcoholic and a party animal, so Vova and his older sister Margarita were forced to vegetate on Margarita's meager stipend, a student Vocational school.
Because of this, the fifteen-year-old boy does not look his age, he is very poorly developed physically and spiritually. Antonov asks the court to take these circumstances into account and not deprive the boy of his freedom, he is ready to vouch for him and take him to the camp on bail. The court took into account Antonov's arguments, sentenced Kireyev to two years of imprisonment, with a one-year deferment, and Vova went to the camp with Antonov.
Antonov, a successful athlete in the past, sincerely hopes that these difficult teenagers, many of whom are crying out for prison, can be returned to normal life, you just need to create the conditions. In his camp, Antonov is trying to create such conditions.
He understands that the camp needs to have iron discipline, but not based on the harsh tyranny of the camp chief or his deputy. Antonov tries to become an older comrade, an authority figure, and an example for the boys to follow.
In order to reduce the distance in communication, Antonov allows the boys to address him as “you”, because many of them do not have fathers, and it is very important for boys to have an adult man whom they can address as “you”.

Antonov's deputy, Oleg Pavlovich Kurennoy, had a different opinion. Unlike Antonov, who did not have a pedagogical education, Kurennoy, a certified teacher, considered such "liberalism" in relations with these difficult teenagers unacceptable.
To prove his point, Kurennoy behaved very harshly and arrogantly with the teenagers, and for this the boys hated him fiercely. One day, a fight broke out in the village between three boys from Antonov's camp and village boys who were several times stronger. The instigators of the fight were the village boys, but the police took the boys from the camp.
Upon learning of this, the "Slavyane" squad, which was working on dismantling the barn, refuses to work, demanding that the camp leadership intervene and stand up for their own.
Since Antonov was in town at the time, the boys address their complaints to Kurennoy. Kurennoy harshly and rudely orders the boys to get to work immediately and punches the squad leader in the face. In the evening, Kurennoy orders that the boys not be given dinner, and this leads to a rebellion in the camp. The boys smash the kitchen and seize the food.
Returning to the camp, Antonov sees a pogrom and finds his deputy tied up in a tent. Having freed Kurennoy, Antonov advises him to write a letter of resignation.
Soon, following Kurennoy’s complaint, Antonov was summoned to the district committee of the Komsomol and threatened with sending a special inspection to him in the camp.
In a depressed state, Antonov returns to the camp, where another emergency awaits him: Vova Kireyev has escaped. Having learned that his alcoholic father has brought another whore into the house and is torturing his sister, the teenager steals a pistol-flare gun from Antonov's tent and heads to the city to kill his scoundrel daddy...
