Poor organ grinder Carlo came to see his friend Giuseppe. Carlo complains to Giuseppe that he will soon have nothing to earn his bread with, because his organ is very old. Giuseppe suggests that Carlo take a log from him, make a doll out of it and walk around the yards with it to give people joy and earn himself a piece of bread.
This log was unusual, as soon as Giuseppe, who was going to chop wood, hit it with an axe, the log screamed with a human voice and began jumping around the yard, frightening the old man quite a bit. Carlo took the strange log from his friend, brought it to his closet and made a boy out of it, whom he called Buratino. Carlo decides to send the boy to school so that he, having studied, would become a man and be able to take care of himself and him, the old man.
To buy his son an alphabet, Papa Carlo sells his jacket. Buratino was very upset when he found out about this, he promised Carlo that someday, after he studied, he would buy him a thousand jackets. But the boy never made it to school. At this time, the Karabas Barabas puppet theater entered the city.
Buratino could not resist the temptation to go to the show. But the ticket cost four soldi, and he had no money. Then he sells his alphabet to a boy. The owner of the theater, Karabas Barabas, treated his dolls very harshly, and now he is even more furious because two of his dolls, Malvina and the dog Artemon, have run away.

Karabas promises to beat the poor dolls severely if they do not tell where the fugitives are, but after the performance. Meanwhile, Karabas presents a "comedy" to the venerable public, the plot of which is that poor Pierrot is beaten by Harlequin throughout the performance.
Buratino decided to stand up for the poor guy and ruined the show. For this, Karabas was going to throw him into the fire to fry meat on. But he told Karabas that he could damage his hearth with his long nose, because he had once pierced one such hearth, only in a painting in Papa Carlo's closet. Having learned about this, Karabas suddenly became kinder and not only let Buratino go, but also gave him five gold coins.
Buratino was about to go to the store to buy an alphabet and a jacket for Papa Carlo, but he fell victim to swindlers and beggars: the "blind" cat Basilio and the "lame" fox Alice. Having learned that the boy has money, they offer him to go with them to the land of fools. In this country there is a field of miracles, in which you need to bury money at midnight, pour water and say three magic words. And in the morning a tree will grow in that place, on which instead of leaves there will be gold coins.
Buratino did so and waited for the morning. But the swindlers reported to the police that Buratino was a thief and a swindler. The police grabbed him and threw him off the bridge into a pond. In this pond lived the turtle Tartila, who learned that Buratino had good and pure intentions, and gave him a golden key. However, over the many years that Tartila kept the key, she forgot which door it was for.
