Действие фильма «Пропавшая экспедиция» происходит в 1918 году. В России второй год идет жестокая civil war: the country is in famine, devastation, unprecedented rampant crime. In order to buy bread, the young Soviet republic needs gold, so the sovnarkom decides to send a prospecting expedition to Siberia, to the Ardybash River, where, according to ancient legends and tales, there were huge reserves of gold.

Smelkov, a professor-geologist known since pre-revolutionary times, was appointed to lead the expedition, assisted by only two assistants: Commissar Arsen and Red Army officer Kumanin. On the road, Smelkov's expedition is joined by his daughter Tasia, former White Guard officer Zimin, who has escaped from hard labor, and young partisan Mitka, whom the commander of the detachment assigned to Smelkov as a guide.
Being a true patriot of Russia, Smelkov never got involved in politics and tried to remain neutral. Smelkov wanted to work honestly for the good of Russia, but he did not get into the essence of events taking place in the country. But since there was a war in the country, and the area of the expedition's activity was on the front line, soon, willy-nilly, the formidable events themselves entered Smelkov's life and he had to finally make his choice....
