Narrative:
After the battle in the Spadshchansky forest, the Germans hastened to report that they had finished off Kovpak's partisans, but Kovpak's detachment was not only not destroyed, but also significantly increased. Every day Kovpak's detachment was replenished not only with new partisans, but also united other partisan detachments and soon received the status of a partisan unit.
In the first half of 1942, the partisans managed to liberate many large settlements in the Sumy region and take control of a significant part of the region. The Germans were seriously concerned about this situation in their rear and were forced to withdraw significant forces from the front, throwing them against the partisans. This forced the partisans to retreat back into the forests to their base in the area of Staraya Huta.
Nevertheless, a bold and daring decision to use partisan detachments and units was maturing at Headquarters. They were ordered to carry out raids deep into the enemy's rear, to the right-bank Ukraine, where the most important communications for supplying the front were located, and the partisan movement was not yet developed.
Moving west, Kovpak's detachment destroyed small enemy garrisons along the way, and on December 7, having successfully crossed the Dnieper, set foot on the land of right-bank Ukraine. Now the partisans' goal was the city of Sarny, where the largest railway junction in Western Ukraine was located.
Hundreds of trains with manpower and equipment passed through this strategic facility every day on their way to Stalingrad, where the outcome of the war was soon to be decided, so the Germans took all necessary measures to defend the hub.
Kovpak received this information from intelligence and realized that it would not be possible to take the well-fortified Sarny junction by force, and even if it were possible, the losses would be enormous. How to carry out the order and save people? Day and night Kovpak and his entire staff think. And then, during one of the sleepless nights, a brilliant solution comes to the people's commander's head: instead of storming the Sarny junction, blow up all the railway bridges around it...
