Действие фильма «Третий тайм» разворачивается в июне 1942 года. В честь годовщины начала войны немцы решают организовать футбольный матч между своей командой «Легион Кондор» сборной города, собранных из местных мастеров. По мнению оккупантов, футбол между немцами и местными мог послужить катализатором для улучшения отношения к оккупационной власти.
To this end, the Germans release several former football players who played for famous Soviet clubs before the war from the prisoner-of-war camp. They are promised unheard-of privileges: free movement around the city, accommodation in a comfortable house, and finally, documents that they will be given after the match.
But the Soviet footballers, who had time to fight at the front, do not want to accept any handouts from enemy hands, and are preparing to escape. However, a provocateur planted in the team learns of this plan and informs the commandant's office.
The escape was punishable by execution, but given the political importance of the upcoming match, the Soviet footballers are not executed, but their detention regime is tightened. Now they have no choice but to take part in this disgrace, which will be watched by local residents.
However, later they realized how symbolic it would be to win against the Germans on the anniversary of the beginning of the war, even if it was at the front, but still, victory on the football field was also important. The Germans understood this perfectly well, and therefore took all measures to ensure that the Soviet football players did not win.
In the middle of the second half, when the city team has tied the score, the city commandant orders the match to be stopped. During the break, the Soviet football players are informed that if they win, they will be shot.
Coming out for the third half, the Soviet footballers were determined to win this match, despite the fact that in this case they would face certain death...
