The action of the movie Hussar ballad The story unfolds on the eve of the Patriotic War of 1812. The retired staff major Azarov's estate is visited by the brave hussar lieutenant Rzhevsky (Y. Yakovlev). Hussar was on vacation and arrived at Azarov's estate with a letter from his uncle. On the threshold of the house Rzhevsky meets Azarov's niece Shurochka (L.Golubkina), who, preparing for a masquerade ball, changed into the uniform of a hussar-cornet.
The lieutenant did not understand the humor and mistook Shurochka for an actual cornet, and she, seeing this, decided to play along. Having learned that the young cornet was a relative of Azarov and a cousin of his niece Alexandra, Rzhevsky revealed to him a "terrible" secret. Some years ago he had squandered his fortune, and his uncle had taken over his patronage.
And this uncle set the brave hussar Rzhevsky a condition: he must marry Shurochka Azarova, the niece of his best friend. But, as Rzhevsky explained to the cornet, he did not wish to marry the feminine fashionable girl, as he imagined the future bride to be, but did it out of obligation to his uncle.
Offended by these words of the lieutenant, Shurochka decides to turn the self-loving hussar's head and make him marry her for love, not by compulsion. In the evening at the ball, she tried to realize this idea, but the alarming news of the outbreak of war forced an early end to the ball.
All the officers were ordered to go immediately to their regiments. And the heroic lieutenant-hussar disappeared from Shurochka's life as quickly as he had appeared.
