A Word for the Poor Hussar (1980 film)

The film takes place in 19th century Russia. A hussar regiment arrives in the provincial town of Gubernsk. At the same time, the secret adviser Count Merzlyaev arrives in the city, having received information about a conspiracy within the regiment.

Граф намерен разоблачить заговорщиков с помощью маскарада. Его камердинер Артюхов (Егорыч) должен сыграть роль бунтовщика, приговоренного к расстрелу. А пятеро подозреваемых в заговоре гусар обязаны были исполнять приказ. Для того чтобы скрыть Егорыча, Мерзляев помещает его в тюрьму, где они репетируют «расстрел».

В это время актер Бубенцов и его дочь Настя выступают в пьесе «Отелло». Гусар Алексей Плетнев, который влюблен в Настю, срывает спектакль и оказывается в тюрьме, где встречает Егорыча. А Бубенцов получает предложение от Мерзляева на роль бунтовщика.

When the hussars are ordered to participate in the execution, their commander Pokrovsky is displeased, but still carries out the order. Pletnev stages an attack on the convoy, Bubentsov manages to escape, but Merzlyaev does not trust Pletnev and arrests the hussar.

Mezlyaev decides to play this show to the end and takes Bubentsov to be shot again. But this time the hussars refuse to shoot the "rebel", and Bubentsov, knowing that they are threatened with hard labor for this, reveals Merzlyaev's vile masquerade...
