Plot:
Action of the film Forgotten Melody for Flute takes place in the late 80s of the last century in the USSR during perestroika. Words such as glasnost, acceleration, state acceptance – attributes of perestroika – firmly enter into people's everyday life. But the huge bureaucratic apparatus did not want to change and became the main obstacle perestroika.
The film's protagonist, Leonid Semenovich Filimonov (Leonid Filatov), is a typical Soviet bureaucrat, deputy head of the "Main Directorate of Free Time." Filimonov once graduated from the conservatory and even played the flute quite well, but he did not become a musician. A successful marriage (Leonid Semenovich's father-in-law was a high-ranking Soviet official) helped Filimonov make a successful career.
Thanks to this, Filimonov had a large salary, an apartment in an elite building, a prestigious brand of car, trips abroad and, finally, access to special trades, where an ordinary Soviet citizen could only dream of getting into.
But one day Filimonov, on duty, inspected a people's theater. The theater's team, consisting of medical workers, submitted to the high commission headed by Filimonov a production of Gogol's "The Government Inspector" in a modern interpretation. Filimonov did not like this production, but he liked the young and pretty nurse Lida (Tatyana Dogileva), who played in the play.

For this reason, Leonid Semenovich approved the performance and praised the guys for their bold production, but upon returning to management, he changed his mind and banned it.
But soon his paths with Lida crossed again. Filimonov had a heart attack and Lida, who ironically turned out to be a nurse from Filimonov's department, was doing a cardiogram for him. Using his official position, Filimonov got Lida to come to his house and give him injections.
At home, Filimonov timidly begins to court Lida and soon they begin an affair. This circumstance becomes public knowledge not only from Filimonov's management, but also from his wife. Filimonov was forced to leave home and move in with Lida, in a small room in a communal apartment.

In addition, Leonid Semenovich lost his car and was forced to get to work by bus; another person went on a business trip to Austria instead of him. But the most important thing was that now his appointment as head of the department was under threat. And one day Filimonov had a terrible dream: he was left without work and was forced to play the flute on the street, earning his living.
This circumstance brought Filimonov back to reality, he runs away from Lida and returns to his wife. To his great relief, Filimonov's wife did not have time to tell her father about their breakup, and soon Leonid Semenovich takes the coveted post of head of the department. Unable to bear such a treacherous betrayal, Lida quits the clinic.
While holding a meeting in his office, Filimonov sees Lida leaving the administration building and walking down the street. At that moment, he has another heart attack. Losing consciousness, Leonid Semenovich demands that Lida be brought to him, feeling pangs of conscience and great guilt towards her. At that time, Lida sees an ambulance rushing to the administration and senses that an accident has happened to Filimonov. Running to the administration, she brings Filimonov back to his senses, who survived clinical death and even stood in line for the Last Judgment…
