Главный герой фильма Анатолий Ефремович Новосельцев — сотрудник статистического управления мечтает, наконец, к своим сорока годам получить повышение по службе. И занять вакантное место начальника отдела light industry.

However, the director of the department, Lyudmila Prokofieva Kalugina, did not have a very high opinion of Novoseltsev. Therefore, the position of head of light industry could remain vacant for a long time.

But with the appearance of the energetic deputy director Yuri Grigorievich Samokhvalov in the management, everything could change. After all, he had been on friendly terms with Novoseltsev, since their university days.

However, Kalugina had such a low opinion of Novoseltseva that even the deputy's patronage did not help. Then Samokhvalov suggests that Anatoly "make advances" to the director.

Starting a light office romance with such a callous, heartless and dry woman as Kalugina was an extremely difficult matter. And considering her much higher official position, it was doubly difficult.
