Narrative:

The action of the movie Goldmine takes place in Leningrad in the second half of the 70s. In April 1976, the prisoner Brunov, sentenced to eight years in prison for currency trading, escapes from prison speculation.

In August 1977, Oleg Torchinsky, head of the city department of a department store, was hit by a car. An investigative team arrived at the scene of the accident and became interested in the fact that the head of the department was on a deserted road at night. At the scene Torchinsky left many cigarette butts, which implied that he was expecting someone at this place.

On that day, the detectives were approached by the Drozdovski family with a statement: their summer house was being watched by unknown persons. As it turned out later, Brunov's escape, the attack on Torchinsky and the surveillance of the Drozdovskys' dacha were links in the same chain. Soon this hunch was confirmed by Igor Karpov, Torchinsky's colleague and friend.

After learning that his friend was in a serious condition in hospital, Karpov told the detectives that Torchinsky had approached him a few days earlier with a request to help him find a treasure hidden somewhere in the yard of the Drozdovskys' dacha. Kaopov also recalled that that evening he and Torchinsky had been at a restaurant and two girls had joined them at the table. With one of them, Larissa, Oleg was to meet on the day of the attempt on his life.

The detectives set up surveillance on Larissa and found out that she was meeting a photographer named Kosov, who was also under surveillance. At this time Karpov is attacked, and only thanks to the fact that the detectives were following him, Karpov is only slightly wounded. The criminal is gone, but by fingerprints on the knife they identify him - it is Brunov, who is on the All-Union wanted list.

The detectives pick up Brunov's case and establish that the Drozdovskys' summer house once belonged to Brunov and that he probably hid all his gold there before his arrest. It is impossible to find Brunov himself, he, like an invisible man, disappeared in the city. The detectives intuitively feel that Kosov is somehow connected with Brunov, but it was impossible to track down Brunov through Kosov.

What was the surprise of the detectives when they found out that Kosov and Brunov are the same person. It was incredible, but soon they managed to get another clue in Brunov's case - it was a certain plastic surgeon Jan Karlovich Podnieks....
