Narrative:
The film is set in the mid-1920s in Soviet Russia, during the NEP. Moscow is overwhelmed by crime, and in the district of the police chief, former cavalryman Vasily Klimov, robbers have committed six armed robberies in just two months. The senior police chief demands that Klimov step up efforts to catch the robbers.
Klimov complains that he has only one or two employees, and every dog knows them by sight. Pyotr Petrovich promises to give Klimov two competent Chekists from Petrograd. Soon one of them, Nikolai Panin, arrived to Klimov. The second has already begun to carry out the task.
Klimov hands Panin a letter and a cross that belonged to a relative of Irina Kholmina, the owner of the tavern on Pyatnitskaya. This relative had been arrested, and now Panin had to get into his role, fortunately Kholmina did not know him by sight.
Klimov knew that the tavern on Pyatnitskaya was not only a den of criminals, but also the residence of the famous robber Igor Rybin, nicknamed "Grey". Klimov also knew that all the robberies in his area were the work of this same "Grey". Klimov even wanted to simply grab "Grey" by the gills, as in the good old days they grabbed any "counter-terrorist" and put him up against the wall without any evidence.

But the country is now building a state of law and it is impossible to seize a Soviet citizen just like that, even if everyone around knows that he is a criminal. One day, two former warrant officers of the tsarist army, childhood friends Mikhail Eremin, nicknamed "Gypsy", and Mikhail Lavrov ("Frenchman"), came into the tavern. In the tavern, "Gypsy" stands up for the musician, a former officer of the tsarist army.
"Grey", who observed the conflict, calls "Gypsy" to his office. He liked the bold and courageous former warrant officer, and he offers "Gypsy" to work with him. But their first joint raid ended in failure, a police ambush awaited them at the scene. Soon "Grey" received information that two security officers had been infiltrated into the tavern.
"Grey" understands that he needs to urgently expose the agents, or he will soon be taken. Frenchman volunteers to help "Grey". Meanwhile, the police learned that a waiter, Panin's double, had escaped from custody. Panin is in danger and Klimov decides to warn him. The operative sent to the tavern manages to transmit a danger signal to Panin, but he himself is killed by bandits; one of the robbers recognized him.
Panin meets Klimov and tells him that the gang is led by the owner of the tavern and that she has her own man in the police. Panin himself, risking his life, returns to the tavern. But "Frenchman" has been keeping an eye on him for a long time. He asks pickpocket Pashka, nicknamed "America", to steal Panin's notebook from his back pocket.
This notebook "Frenchman" shows to "Grey". It was a dossier on all the guests of the tavern, except for "Gypsy". Panin manages to escape, and "Gypsy" is captured by bandits, "Grey" plans to exchange his head for his own, in case the police catch them.
But he failed to do this, the police bust the gang and kill the leader himself while resisting. "Gypsy" is arrested as a member of the gang. He is surprised to learn that his childhood friend and former ensign of the tsarist army "Frenchman" is this second Chekist, planted in the tavern...
