Narrative:

The action of the film "Gifts by Phone" takes place in the mid-70s in Riga. An accident occurs at a freight station: a diesel locomotive driver falls under the wheels of a train. But despite the testimony confirming the version of an accident, the detectives still decide to check the version of murder.

The fact is that the daughter of the deceased engineer told the investigation that her father had recently been receiving strange money transfers, and that a strange stranger with an unusual old voice had been calling him on the phone.

Exactly the same transfers were received by another driver Arnold Peterson, who worked on the freight route "Riga-Klaipeda". Every time an unknown person called him on the phone and thanked him for the service rendered.

Peterson understands that he was not given such a large amount of money for free; it was probably connected with some kind of machinations during railway transportation, to which they were thus trying to tie him.

Understanding what these gifts over the phone could end up doing for him, Peterson decides to immediately contact the police, but a lawyer he knows advises him not to do so. Firstly, Peterson had no evidence other than the money transfers he had received, which only showed that Peterson was an accomplice to possible crimes.

Then Peterson decides to expose the criminals himself, and when the unknown person called him again, the driver pretended that he was ready to fulfill all the demands of the blackmailers...
