The plot of the movie Beware of the car:
A wave of car thefts swept through Moscow. The criminal acted skillfully, boldly, leaving no traces. He stole cars only from those who could be called potential criminals themselves. These were bribe-takers, embezzlers, and resourceful Soviet businessmen who did not want to live on one salary.
Investigator Maxim Podberezovikov, who was in charge of the case, believed that in this way the criminal was probably preparing mitigating circumstances for himself at trial.
However, in order to judge him, he first had to be caught. And this was very difficult. Because the criminal was not a hardened repeat offender, but a modest insurance agent Yuri Detochkin. Having access to information about the insurance property of citizens, he easily found the right clients.
Ironically, Detochkin and Podberezovikov played in a folk theater for drivers and policemen and even managed to become friends. Being close to the detective, Detochkin could know first-hand about the progress of the investigation, and this significantly complicated its progress.

However, despite his second secret life, Detochkin was an extremely honest and decent person. He created social justice in his own way and even sincerely believed that he was helping the police.
But Podberezovikov thought differently. Only a court can call a person a criminal, and it must punish the one who stumbled on behalf of all people.
Podberezovikov considered Detochkin to be the same criminal as those whose cars he stole. And, despite their friendship, he was going to bring this case to its logical conclusion. However, when Detochkin came to him with a confession, the investigator was surprised to learn that Detochkin had transferred all the money from the cars he sold to orphanages...
