Narrative:

The main characters of the film Verticalfive friends who are united by mountaineering. During their next vacation, the friends decide to go to the Caucasus, in Svaneti to conquer Mount Or-Tau. Larisa, a young doctor who is writing a thesis on the acclimatization of athletes at high altitudes, also wants to go with the climbers.

The group's leader is experienced mountaineer Vitaly Lomov, who agrees to lead the group only on the condition that his orders are followed unquestioningly, because in the mountains, as in the army, iron discipline is needed. Arriving in Svaneti, the friends stay with their old comrade Vissarion. Vissarion greets the courageous conquerors of the peaks with hospitality, as is customary in the Caucasus.

A year ago, his son Geliko, who was also an experienced mountaineer, went to conquer Or-Tau and never returned. Vissarion never buried his son's body. Vissarion gives his ice axe to Alexander Nikitin, who reminded him very much of his son. After visiting Vissarion for several days, the group sets off for the mountains. Before leaving, Vissarion tries to dissuade Lomov from this dangerous undertaking; he takes Lomov to the family cemetery, where there is no grave of his son who disappeared in the mountains.

But Lomov and his friends are determined to conquer the summit. And so the four daredevils: Lomov, Gennady, Larisa and Alexander set off to Or-Tau, over four thousand meters high. Vladimir and Larisa remain below. Vladimir must maintain contact with the climbers and the weather station. Lomov, who served in these parts during the war and is well acquainted with the terrain, carefully instructs the group.

And so, finally, the group slowly ascends. On the second day of the journey, Vladimir receives an alarming report from the weather station about the approach of a cold cyclone. All tourists and climbers were ordered to leave the mountains as soon as possible and return to the base. Vladimir hurried to notify Lomov, but to no avail, since it was agreed that they would only be in touch in the evenings.

Finally, by the evening of the second day, Lomov's group reached a large plateau just before the summit, which was only five hundred meters away. At that time, Vladimir got in touch and reported the impending danger. But Gennady, who received the message, did not report it to the group leader.

After all, the summit is just a stone's throw away, and when else would such a chance come up? Finally, they reached the cherished summit and, pleased with themselves, began their descent. But at that moment, a cyclone began. Alexander fell and was injured. Realizing that they would not go far with their wounded comrade, and that help would arrive in at least five days, Lomov left Larisa with Alexander in a small cave. And he himself, together with Gennady, hurried down for help.

As they descended, they found a tent with a frozen corpse of a man in it. From the suicide note, Lomov realized that it was Geliko, Vissarion's son. In the note, Geliko reported that he had reached the summit, but had broken his leg during the descent. Gennady began to panic and asked Lomov to leave him there and go down for help.

At that moment, Gennady informed Lomov that he had ignored the danger message. Lomov did not answer Gennady, but began to descend as quickly as possible. Help arrived on time, all the climbers were rescued and returned home safely…
