In times of revolutions and other social upheavals, all kinds of swindlers, adventurers and great combiners are born. But if the literary mastermind Ostap Bender honored the penal code, his '90s counterparts could easily go on a killing spree.
On August 12, 1994, a woman applied to the railway police department of Arkhangelsk and reported the disappearance of her son Alexander Kharitonenko.
A few days later, the Filimonov brothers made a similar statement to the Oktyabrsky police department and told the investigation that they parted with Kharitonenko at the door of the pension fund "North" and after that no one saw him again.

The non-state regional pension fund "Sever" was known all over Arkhangelsk. The principle of operation of this pension fund was no different from any other financial pyramid scheme of those years. The most famous such organization called MMM.
But in those times there were no methods of fighting with such structures, and the fund was organized in such a way that it could not be tampered with.
The missing Alexander Kharitonenko worked in this fund as deputy chairman of the board on commercial issues. Therefore, the first version of the investigators was the version of kidnapping for ransom.
But soon had to abandon it, because so far the kidnappers have not announced their demands, and the director of the pension fund Andrei Leshechkin informed the detectives that Kharitonenko did not deal with money, and was only engaged in negotiations with various partners.
Senior investigator of the prosecutor's office Vladimir Perminov was thinking about Leshechkin's information, but suddenly remembered that he knew this surname from somewhere.
Turning over the cases, Perminov established several years ago Leshechkin was a suspect in the case of the murder of his companion, but then he somehow miraculously managed to avoid deserved punishment....
