В 1984 году генеральным секретарем ЦК КПСС стал Михаил Горбачев, который взял курс на перестройку и демократизацию страны. Having given some political freedom, Gorbachev unwittingly let the Genie out of the bottle, and soon criticism of the authorities began to develop into mass discontent with the central authorities.
A powerful nationalist movement is emerging in the formerly fraternal republics, and voices are increasingly being raised about secession from the USSR. The Baltic republics were the first to declare their withdrawal from the USSR, followed by the Transcaucasian republics.
If the divorce from the USSR in the Baltics was more or less peaceful, then the first blood was shed in the republics of Transcaucasia. Tbilisi, Baku, Nagorno-Karabakh, North Ossetia, South Ossetia are the first hot spots on the body of the long-suffering country, then there will be Transnistria and the war in Chechnya.
The bloody divorce will last for decades, and hundreds of thousands of people will fall victim to it. Could the collapse of the USSR have happened peacefully? Who was behind the bloody events that swept the country in the late 80s and early 90s?
