It is very hard to earn a lot of money. But as it turns out, it is even harder to legalize it if it was earned by criminal means. Especially in America, where tax evasion is punishable by more penalties than drug manufacturing and distribution.
It was for non-payment of taxes that the famous American gangster of the 1930s got burned. Al Capone. And that's exactly the same problem Walter White faced.
