A provincial Soviet town is shaken by an extraordinary incident. Fyodor Odinets, a well-known war and labor veteran in the town, was attacked. The intruder stole his wallet and inflicted severe bodily injuries.
Taking into account the personality of the victim, the investigation of this case is under the personal control of the first secretary of the City Party Committee.
The police authorities were instructed to solve this crime in the shortest possible time. And the detectives rushed headlong to fulfill this instruction. On hot trails they manage to detain a group of teenagers, resting in the forest near the scene of the incident. One of them, Nikolai Varentsov, found the victim's wallet.
Despite this seemingly ironclad evidence, investigator Zaparin doubts Varentsov's guilt. He could not have physically committed this crime in terms of time. In addition, there were no traces of blood on Varentsov's clothes or mud on his shoes from the scene of the crime.
And the purse, as Varentsov showed, he found at the gate of a certain "Asi", a well-known liquor dealer in the city.
However, the leadership rejected all of Zaparin's arguments and removed him from the case. Varentsov was arrested and his friends were forced to give false testimony against him. At this time, the victim died, and Varentsov was facing "capital punishment". It seemed that no one and nothing could save the young man from undeserved punishment.
