The film takes place in 1943. Soviet counterintelligence detains a German saboteur who reports that a German intelligence school is operating in the German-occupied territory of Western Ukraine. Abwehr, which trains saboteurs en masse to work in the Soviet rear.

Soviet counterintelligence already had information about the Germans' grand offensive being prepared on the Dnieper, which, in Hitler's opinion, would become revenge for the defeat at Kursk.

In all likelihood, before the offensive itself, the Germans would send saboteurs en masse into the Soviet rear; for this reason, it was important for the Soviet command to identify enemy agents at the initial stage in order to force the Germans to advance almost blindly.

To do this, the Soviet intelligence leadership plans to carry out a daring action, stealing an archive with personal files of enemy agents, which was located on the territory of the intelligence school. The task was complicated by the fact that the base was located in the mountains and the approaches to it were carefully guarded, so such an important and difficult task was entrusted to one of the best Soviet intelligence officers, Major Yegor Semin.

Having assessed the complexity of the task before him, Semin carefully selected the most experienced scouts for his group, with whom he immediately began grueling training. At the last stage of the operation, Semin's group would have to be supported by a partisan detachment of the NKVD, and Semin planned to get onto the school grounds through a former White Guard officer, now Abwehr lieutenant colonel Kareev...
